PRETORIA – The African Union (AU) is an intergovernmental organisation that seeks to promote unity and solidarity among African countries.
It is committed to promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent. However, in recent times, the AU’s commitment to these ideals has been called into question due to its actions, or lack thereof, in certain situations.
One such situation is the ongoing conflict between Cameroon and Ambazonia. Ambazonia, also known as the Southern Cameroons, is a region in Cameroon that has been seeking independence since the 1960s.
The conflict between Cameroon and Ambazonia has been characterised by human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and forced disappearances.
The situation in Cameroon and Ambazonia is similar to that of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both conflicts involve a struggle for independence, and both have resulted in human rights abuses. However, the AU has taken a very different approach to these two situations.
In the case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the African Union has been very vocal in its support for Palestine. It has condemned Israel’s actions and called for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
However, in the case of Cameroon and Ambazonia, the African Union has been largely silent. It has not condemned Cameroon’s actions or called for the establishment of an independent Ambazonia.

This is a clear demonstration of hypocrisy on the part of the AU. It cannot claim to be committed to promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent while ignoring human rights abuses in one situation and condemning them in another.
The AU must be consistent in its approach to these situations and ensure that it upholds the same standards in all cases.
Furthermore, the AU’s silence on the situation in Cameroon and Ambazonia is particularly troubling given the severity of the human rights abuses that have been reported.
The AU has a responsibility to protect the human rights of all Africans, and it must take action to address the situation in Cameroon and Ambazonia.
In conclusion, the African Union’s approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Cameroon and Ambazonia demonstrates hypocrisy.
The AU cannot claim to be committed to promoting peace, security, and stability on the continent while ignoring human rights abuses in one situation and condemning them in another.
The AU must be consistent in its approach to these situations and ensure that it upholds the same standards in all cases.
Furthermore, the AU has a responsibility to protect the human rights of all Africans, and it must take action to address the situation in Cameroon and Ambazonia.
