HARARE – Zimbabwe Health minister Obadiah Moyo was on Saturday released on Z$50,000 (US$500) bail by a Harare magistrate following his Friday arrest on criminal abuse of office charges over procurement deal with Drax International.
Prosecutors did not oppose. Rhodesville police are reported to have allowed Moyo to sleep at his Mt Pleasant home, saving him the indignity of a jail cell.
The ease with which officials implicated in the CovidGate scandal are passing through the justice system has shone greater light on the extent of judicial capture by the ruling Zanu PF.
Oppositions figures seeking bail are often thrown from pillar to post, with courts deferring the matter unnecessarily as a means to deny them their freedom.
