HARARE – The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has officially released the November 2023 Advanced Level examination results, revealing a noteworthy improvement in the overall pass rate and indicating a gender disparity in performance.
ZIMSEC board chairperson Professor Eddie Mwenje announced the results during a media briefing in Harare on Friday, highlighting a 6.6% increase in the pass rate compared to the previous year.
Professor Mwenje stated, “The ZIMSEC would like to advise the nation of the release of the 2023 November ‘A’ level results. With effect from January 12, 2023, at 15:00 hrs, advanced-level results will be accessible to all candidates and authorized personnel.”
He continued, “The total number of candidates who sat for the November 2023 examinations was 34,437 compared to 36,945 in November 2022. The November 2023 pass rate stands at 94.60%, indicating an increase of 6.60% compared to the 88% pass rate for November 2022.”
One notable trend in the results was the marginally better performance of female candidates over their male counterparts.
Mr. Moses Mhike, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, shared detailed statistics, saying, “14,594 female candidates passed two or more subjects, yielding a 96.38% pass rate, while 13,719 males passed with two or more subjects, translating to a 93.95% pass rate.”
Furthermore, Mr. Mhike emphasized that it is against the law for any learning institution to withhold results due to non-payment of school fees.
He warned, “Schools are not allowed to hold results from students due to tuition arrears. Any other legal action can be taken in case of withholding of examination results.”
Candidates can access their results online through the ZIMSEC portal, while heads of examination centers are authorized to collect physical copies from ZIMSEC regional offices starting Monday.
The improved pass rate reflects the dedication and effort put forth by students, educators, and the education system as a whole, providing a positive outlook for Zimbabwe’s academic landscape.
