MDC Alliance Vice President Tendai Biti has criticized the government led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa for its illegal house demolitions it is carrying out in the capital.
The operation resulted in the demolition of homes and other buildings deemed illegal in Goromonzi, Glen View, Mbare and other high-density suburbs.
Several residents of the targeted areas have lost millions of dollars in property as what are described as political operations are launched without warning from the authorities.
A number of commentators have denounced the Zanu PF regime and the Harare City Council for their inhuman antics which have seen many buildings destroyed this winter.
Most of the residents who fell victim to the land barons’ housing programs have nowhere to put their heads or even conduct their small businesses.
The whole situation caught the attention of prominent politician Tendai Biti, who in turn chastised the Mnangagwa regime for saying it was only good at destroying everything in the country.
“In the past 6 weeks alone, without a court order, the regime has demolished hundreds of homes [and] made thousands of Zimbabweans homeless.
“It has destroyed more homes than it has built in the past 10 years. Thousands of families remain stranded [and] homeless during a cold [and] vicious winter.
“The house demolitions have been accompanied by the simultaneous destruction of markets [and] informal sector jobs like Siyaso.
“In a country with 95% unemployment, the destruction of livelihoods is particularly ruthless [and] insensitive when there are no social safety nets.
Mnangagwa’s regime must be [the] only regime in the world whose sole function is to tirelessly see the suffering of its people.
“There is a whole department dedicated to inventing ways [and] means to plunge the citizen into misery. Undoubtedly the worst government in the world,” Biti said.
