BLANTYRE – Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has expressed frustration with the power struggles within the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), saying the leadership dispute is hampering the smooth running of parliamentary business.
Hara’s frustration comes amid the failure by the Business Committee of Parliament, which includes the party leadership and decides future business, to start its session after the DPP fielded two chief whips from both sides.

During yesterday’s meeting, Nkhata Bay Central MP Symon Vuwa Kaunda, who was nominated by party leader Peter Mutharika, and Nkhata Bay North West MP Julius Chione Mwase emerged as representatives of the faction of embattled opposition leader Kondwani Nankhumwa for the DPP.
In an interview after the afternoon works council meeting, the speaker said parliament had asked Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda for legal advice.
Hara said Nyirenda advised to just appoint Nankhumwa based on the interpretation of the court order reinstating him as opposition leader in parliament.
