Cape Town City down poor Kaizer Chiefs in league match

CAPE TOWN – Kaizer Chiefs returned to losing ways in the DStv Premiership after a 2-0 loss to Cape Town City on Tuesday night at Cape Town Stadium.

The underachieving Amakhosi fell behind after five minutes when Thamsanqa Mkhize gained control of a ball behind the defence and set up Darwin Gonzalez for his third goal of the season from the far post.

Things got worse for Kaizer Chiefs when Reeve Frosler pulled a hamstring on a cross attempt near the half hour mark and was substituted for Happy Mashiane.

Cape Town City doubled their lead 17 minutes into the second half when Nathan Fasika made a good leap from the back post and headed in Mayo’s free kick.

Chiefs launched late attacks to hoping salvage something from the game, but City shut up shop and secured their first win of the season.

After the match, Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane said his team failed to execute their plan against City after starting with three centre-backs.

“We obviously started very slow, very sloppy at the back. We actually planned for this, the only thing that we didn’t do right was to execute the plan,” Zwane told SuperSport TV.

“We knew that they would want to drop the ball behind that is why we came with three defenders so we can close those spaces with the wing-backs,” he added.
