HARARE – CAPS United players are reportedly threatening to boycott their high profile match against Highlanders on Sunday to show their disgruntlement over unpaid salaries and general poor working conditions.
The players speaking on condition of anonymity said the CAPS United executive has been lying to them for a long time and has been using threats of sacking to pacify them but with the season coming to an end, they are fearing that they can may not get their money this year if they don’t demonstrate.
The unhappy CAPS United players initially wanted to boycott the Chibuku Super Cup match against Black Rhinos but just went ahead to fulfill the fixture.
The players have not attended training on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation of the Highlanders match.
“The executive has been using divide and rule tactics since our last industrial action before the Cranborne Bullets match in May. Morale is very low among the players. Last week they lied to us that they had deposited money into our accounts but now we know the trick that they employ.
“They come with fake stamped deposit slips from the bank and they say we have deposited your money. We now know the trick because they have been doing this for a long time,” said one player on condition of anonymity.
Another player said: “They use divide and rule tactics on players and that’s the reason why Ronald Chitiyo and Dennis Dauda refused to come back in May because they knew they would always be scapegoats. They also have some moles one or two that they give money to sell out.”
“Players are now being looked after by fans who give them handouts here and there. The executive also go and lie to the media to try and create a picture like things are good at the club. But the players now know all the tricks.”
CAPS United have been having perennial financial problems with players periodically staging strikes. In may the players delayed the kick off the match against Cranborne Bullets demanding to be paid their outstanding dues.
