PRETORIA – ANC former president Jacob Zuma has publicly backed Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for the party presidency saying he hasn’t changed his mind since 2017.
Just hours before the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal announces its preferred candidates to take the ANC forward in December, former President Jacob Zuma released a statement giving his own thoughts on the upcoming conference shares.
He said Dlamini-Zuma remains the leader most capable of pushing the ANC forward, while questioning the support of those who now support former Ramaphosa supporters.
Dlamini-Zuma lost to Cyril Ramaphosa in the 2017 ANC presidential race by 179 votes but with the incumbent facing opposition both from within and externally, the former will fancy her chances of victory.
KwaZulu-Natal will announce their preferred candidates on Tuesday morning.
It is this move that is expected to back former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, which appears to have prompted former President Jacob Zuma’s midnight statement.
It’s a classic move by Zuma, sharing his views with the nation in the wee hours of the morning, and this time he’s focusing on developments in the ANC.
Zuma also reached out to young people in the ANC, asking why they would want full ownership of leadership roles when they could explore a generational mix.
The former president has also made himself available for ANC as the national chairperson.
