Guardiola aims for full circle of trophies as Manchester City wins UEFA Super Cup

Manchester City's manager, Pep Guardiola, is setting his sights on completing a "full circle" of trophies after his team secured their first UEFA Super Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Sevilla in Athens.

ATHENS – Manchester City‘s manager, Pep Guardiola, is setting his sights on completing a “full circle” of trophies after his team secured their first UEFA Super Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Sevilla, following a 1-1 draw in Athens.

City had to come from behind after Youssef En-Nesyri‘s powerful header gave Sevilla an early lead.

Despite not being at their best, City managed to equalize through Cole Palmer’s goal, sending the game into a penalty shootout.

Guardiola’s side displayed accuracy from the spot, winning 5-4 in the shootout after Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj struck the bar.

If Manchester City can secure a victory at the Club World Cup in December, it would complete Guardiola’s trophy collection since joining the club, which already includes five Premier League titles, four League Cups, two FA Cups, and their maiden Champions League title.

“We are really pleased for the club to win this,” Guardiola expressed. “We miss just one to finish the full circle and have all the titles we can have.”

The match highlighted Manchester City’s need for further reinforcements, as they were missing the creative presence of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva due to injuries and illness.

Guardiola acknowledged the challenges his team faces, stating, “We are not in the best moment, I would say. Football in these games, in this period, is a (toss of a) coin.”

Sevilla, despite their 2-1 home defeat to Valencia at the start of their La Liga season, demonstrated resilience and rose to the occasion.

Sevilla had opportunities to extend their lead, with En-Nesyri missing two clear chances in one-on-one situations against City’s goalkeeper Ederson.

However, City managed to equalize through Palmer’s header, assisted by Rodri.

The penalty shootout saw City maintain their composure, with Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez, Mateo Kovacic, Jack Grealish, and Kyle Walker all converting their penalties.

Manchester City’s triumph in the UEFA Super Cup has left Guardiola optimistic about achieving further success and completing a remarkable circle of victories across different competitions.
