MOSCOW – In a significant development, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that Russian scientists were on the verge of creating vaccines for cancer, offering hope to patients worldwide.
Putin made these remarks during a televised speech at a Moscow forum focusing on future technologies.
“We have come very close to the creation of so-called cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation,” Putin stated optimistically.
He expressed hope that these advancements would soon be available for effective individual therapy, marking a potential breakthrough in the fight against cancer.
However, Putin did not provide specific details regarding the types of cancer targeted by these proposed vaccines or the mechanisms through which they would operate.
Numerous countries and pharmaceutical companies have been actively involved in the pursuit of cancer vaccines.

For instance, the UK government signed an agreement with Germany-based BioNTech last year to initiate clinical trials for personalized cancer treatments, aiming to benefit 10,000 patients by 2030.
Moreover, pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck & Co have been developing an experimental cancer vaccine, which has shown promising results in mid-stage studies.
This vaccine demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of recurrence or death from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, after three years of treatment.
Additionally, the World Health Organization has highlighted the importance of existing vaccines against human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are linked to various cancers such as cervical cancer, as well as vaccines targeting hepatitis B (HBV), a leading cause of liver cancer.
Russia’s pursuit of cancer vaccines comes in the wake of its successful development and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19.
Despite initial public skepticism, Putin himself publicly endorsed the vaccine by receiving it, aiming to bolster confidence in its efficacy and safety.
Putin’s announcement regarding the progress towards cancer vaccines signals a significant advancement in medical science, offering hope for millions of individuals affected by cancer worldwide.
