LPM to submit urgent order to inspect election material for potential fraud

The Landless People's Movement (LPM) has informed that it will submit an urgent court application seeking an order to inspect the contents of the materials used in the 2024 Namibian elections.

WINDHOEK – The Landless People’s Movement (LPM) has informed the High Court that it will, on Monday, 16 December, submit an urgent application seeking an order to inspect the contents of the electoral materials used in the 2024 National Assembly Elections.

The party also wants the court to allow it to inspect the total number of votes cast, spoilt ballots, and votes counted at each polling station, as well as a copy of the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s (ECN) letter motivating President Nangolo Mbumba to extend the voting period.

The LMP, the sole applicant in the matter, cited the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Elsie Nghikembua, the Chief Electoral Officer as the Executive Officer of the ECN, Peter Shaama, and the President Nangolo Mbumba as respondents in the matter.

The party is represented by Dr. Weder, Kauta and Hoveka INC.

In the other story, following the court documents filed by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) on Friday at the High Court against the ECN and the President of Namibia, Eagle FM reached out to lawyer, Nafimane Halweendo, to seek comment on the strength of the case.

Nafimane, highlighted that the IPC is not challenging the outcome of the Presidential or Parliamentary results but rather requesting that the ECN avail information related to the voting process.

“Once the information is availed by the electoral body, then they can assess whether or not to challenge the election results,” he said.

On whether the application before court is a good or bad case, Nafimane noted that at this point it is premature for any legal practitioners to conclude whether it is good or bad because they are seeking information.
