BUDAPEST – Zimbabwean sprinter Makanakaishe Charamba secured a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres at the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest on Tuesday.
Charamba crossed the line in 20.09 seconds, a time that placed him firmly among the world’s best over the distance and underlined the rapid progress he has been making on the global circuit this season.
This was another statement performance on the international stage as Charamba was only overtaken by Morocco’s Yassine Hssine, who clocked a national record time of 19.92 seconds and claimed the top spot.
Nigeria’s Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike came third with a time of 20.18 seconds to complete an all-African podium sweep at one of Europe’s most prestigious athletics meetings.

In the men’s 400 metres event, Zambian athlete Muzala Samukonga secured first place in 44.02 seconds with Hungarian Attila Molnar (44.51) and South Africa’s Zakithi Nene (44.57) in second and third respectively.
Zimbabwean athlete Thandazani Ndhlovu came fourth in 44.64 seconds and missed out on a podium finish.
In the women’s 400 metres event, Zimbabwean athlete Ashley Miller secured fifth place in 55.03 seconds, with United States sprinter Jasmine Jones (52.91) finishing top.
