JOHANNESBURG – The Pretoria High Court is currently embroiled in a contentious case that questions the legality of the multi-million-rand coronation of AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.
King Misuzulu‘s ascendancy to the throne was met with great fanfare in 2022 after he was declared the heir to the highly disputed Zulu kingdom.
However, a faction within the royal family contends that the government’s recognition of his rule was premature and is actively pushing for this decision to be overturned.
This court case is the latest in a series of challenges initiated by Prince Simakade, who strongly believes that he should be the one leading the monarchy.
He asserts that President Cyril Ramaphosa‘s hasty decision to recognize his half-brother as the successor to the late King Zwelithini was an error.

In his view, King Misuzulu’s coronation should have occurred only after the dispute over the throne was resolved either through internal processes or by judicial intervention.
Prince Simakade’s court action has brought President Ramaphosa to the center of a succession battle that has divided the Zulu royal family.
This legal dispute is unique and is expected to set a significant precedent for customary law.
The presiding Judge Norman Davis is expected to continue hearing submissions until Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing power struggle within the AmaZulu monarchy.
The legal battle over King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s coronation represents a critical juncture in the broader struggle for succession within the Zulu royal family, and the outcome of this case may set a far-reaching precedent for customary law in South Africa.
