CRSL: Sheasham edge closer to glory, rivals TelOne held

Sheasham FC opened a seven point lead at the top of the Central Region Soccer League with a resounding 6-0 demolition of Bishopstone at Gweru Sports Club at the weekend.

GWERU – Sheasham FC opened a seven point lead at the top of the Central Region Soccer League with a resounding 6-0 demolition of Bishopstone at Gweru Sports Club at the weekend.

With five matches before the end of the season, Sheasham FC are on course towards winning the title which eluded them on the last day of the previous campaign.

John Nyikadzino’s seems to have learnt a lesson from their brutal failure in 2019 and have been winning key matches while their rivals TelOne have been lethargic dropping points at home.

Sheasham now needs at least three wins in the last five matches to be crowned the champions.

Dongo Saw Mills and Chicken Inn former striker Physwell Madhazi and Respect Chabonga led the rout against Filabusi scoring a brace each while Prosper Andrea and McDonald Mavhuto also added their names to the score sheet.

Nyikadzino was ecstatic after the win but refused to be drawn into talking about the title.

“We are happy with this victory, the boys did well. Scoring six goals is really good for the confidence of the players and the team in general.

“For us it has always been about taking each game as it comes without looking at what is happening elsewhere until the end of the season. We are just running our own race,” Nyikadzino said.

TelOne further lost ground in the title race after drawing 1-1 against lowly Loss Control FC who came into the match struggling to raise a full team.

Loss Control FC coached by John ‘Senior’ Phiri had only two substitutes on the bench with their reserve goalkeeper playing as an infield player but put up a polished performance with Menford Mudzimu putting them ahead just five minutes into the match.

Phiri was pleased with the discipline shown by his players who exhibited some character and determination to get a result despite the odds stacked against them.

“I am pleased with the performance of my players. One of them who was playing on the wings is a goalkeeper, the one who was playing on right back had not played football in a long time. We only had two players on the bench but we got a result,” Phiri said.

“TelOne were playing mostly as individuals not as a team so they lacked coordination and they made it easier for us because our plan to play as a unit worked.”

TelOne laboured to deflate the Loss Control defence and only managed to penetrate in the second half through Blessing Sahondo but could not find a winner. TelOne coach Tendai Chikuni was distraught after the match.

“What else can I say? It’s the same old story. We are creating chances but we are failing to convert. Some of the players that we have are lacking character,” Chikuni said.

Third positioned Vumbachikwe moved to within a point of second placed TelOne after being awarded three points on a 3-0 score line following Kwekwe United’s failure to turn up for the match at Long John stadium.

Tongogara maintained their fourth position on the log standings with a 2-1 away to Paramount United in Gokwe while Clemence Zuze started his tenure as Chapungu head coach on a winning note beating Filabusi 1-0 away at Filabusi stadium.

Piniel Gumbo scored the only goal of the match from a free kick after veteran striker Philip Marufu was brought down just outside the box.

Dulibadzimu got the better of MSU with Leeroy Rwokuda scoring five minutes into the match to give the Beitbridge based side a 1-0 win.

ZPC Munyati snatched a 2-1 win against FC Platinum U19 at Mandava stadium with goals from Anesu Jaravaza and Lloyd Gwerina while Arthur Mundinga scored for FC Platinum U19.
