The Dancehall Doctor, Freeman recently released his latest offering Robbery which has been received with mixed feelings by his legion of fans with some praising it and some criticising it.
Well, it is a normal trend that happens whenever new music is released. In the name of fairness, Freeman has given us another Zimdancehall album and I feel its the same sound we have been getting from him over the past ten years of his career.
That could have been the source of criticism especially from those who are criticising the album because they feel that there was no positive growth, magic and change.
Lately the sound has been evolving and even the culture of riddims has been slowly loosing relevance in the contemporary times.
It can also explain how the evolution of sound has affected Zimdancehall as a genre.
The hype that surrounded the album starting from the album title, cosigns from influencers like Tinashe Mutarisi and publicity work by Nash TV also created an abstract that the album was going to be EXTRAORDINARY, if not the biggest album for 2021.
In the same vein there are other artists who also released big albums. In as much as the album is good, fans were expecting an extraordinary package which would outshine other albums released this year yet it was made out of the same similar sound.
It is also a recurring trend for an album to have a false start marred with criticism yet still dominate and conquer the market.
The album is promising let us give it time and watch the space. On the other hand, we have artists like Seh Calaz who have been working hard pushing a diverse angle with reggae songs and sound in order to cope up with the musical trends.
On that regard, I am looking forward to Bvopfiro Pariro EP. As of now, I still maintain that the Mustard Seed is the biggest contender for the year 2021, Ex Q did well but again it wasn’t a jab enough to move mountains.
