HARARE – Jacob Mafume was on Thursday elected as the new mayor of Harare saving the MDC Alliance from a political onslaught by the rival MDC-T party in the battle to seize control of the capital.

The youthful Mafume polled 19 votes to defeat his opponent Luckson Mukunguma who managed 14 votes in a secret ballot cast by some of the Sunshine City councillors.

Harare has a 46-member council currently controlled by the MDC Alliance which took 45 seats at the last election in July 2018  with the ruling Zanu PF only managing to win one seat in the opposition dominated area.

Mukunguma was being sponsored by Khupe’s MDC-T which attempted to clear his path to victory by recalling 10 MDC Alliance councillors, including the former mayor Herbert Gomba, before Thursday’s vote.

Khupe also appears to have sufficiently intimidated the 14 councillors who backed Mukunguma.

Mafume joined the MDC Alliance coalition as a member of the People’s Democratic Party formally led by Tendai Biti and may be immune from a possible recall by Khupe splinter group.
