NAIROBI – President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the death of former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki at the State House in Nairobi on Friday.
Kibaki, who served as Kenya’s third president from 2003 to 2013, has died aged 90.
“It is a sad day for us as a country. We have lost a great leader, former President Mwai Kibaki,” President Kenyatta said during a press conference at State House.
“I order and direct that, as a sign of the high regard all Kenyans hold for Mwai Kibaki, the country will hold a period of national mourning until sunset on the day of his burial. All flags will fly at half-mast during this period,” he added.
Kibaki is credited with reviving Kenya’s then-battling economy, but his tenure was marred by deadly violence that erupted after his controversial re-election in December 2007.
