LONDON – In a commanding performance, Liverpool stormed towards the Europa League quarter-finals with a resounding 5-1 victory against Sparta Prague on Thursday, solidifying their position as strong contenders in the competition.
Despite an upcoming Premier League showdown against Manchester City looming on Sunday, Liverpool, under the guidance of manager Jurgen Klopp, remained focused and determined to secure a convincing win in the first leg of the tie.
Klopp’s tactical decision to field a robust lineup paid dividends early on, as Alexis Mac Allister converted a penalty just seven minutes into the game, setting the tone for the Reds’ dominance.
Reflecting on the performance, Klopp praised Darwin Nunez for his impactful contributions, stating, “He has the most important attitude a striker needs to have in these chances.”
“He’s just a constant threat and he gives us some spaces and areas and options.”
Nunez showcased his prowess with a well-taken goal, followed by a clinical finish from Mac Allister’s through ball, propelling Liverpool to a comfortable 3-0 lead by halftime.
Despite Sparta Prague’s resilience and sporadic attacking opportunities, Liverpool’s superior quality in the final third was evident, with Luis Diaz extending the lead with a deflected effort shortly after Conor Bradley’s unfortunate own goal early in the second half.
