Man City pile pressure on Chelsea with FA Cup rout

LONDON – Manchester City piled pressure on Chelsea manager Graham Potter as Riyad Mahrez inspired a 4-0 rout in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Premier League champions City got off to the best possible start at the Etihad Stadium by eliminating the pitiful Blues with ease.

From the City team that defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the Premier League on Thursday, Pep Guardiola made seven adjustments.

However, City was still far too dynamic for a failing Chelsea team, as Mahrez scored twice—once on a late penalty and once on a fantastic free-kick—and Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also scored.

In the fourth round, either third-place Oxford or the current league leaders, Arsenal, will visit City.

Chelsea’s first FA Cup third-round loss since 1998 was another setback for a season that was already in danger of getting out of hand after City ousted them from the League Cup earlier this year.

Potter, 47, may be having some restless nights as he struggles with his team’s appalling form, even if it is probably too early for him to be worried about losing his job.

Potter moved from Brighton to replace the fired Thomas Tuchel just four months ago.

Chelsea are in 10th place in the Premier League, 10 points off of the top four spots that the club’s American owners would have undoubtedly anticipated Potter to deliver, having won only three of their last 12 games overall.

“The results in a brief period of time are not encouraging. You can find justifications and excuses, or you can just say it isn’t good enough. Both of those responses are accurate,” said Potter.

“We need to keep getting better and working together because it is obvious that we are struggling as a football club, and that is not at all nice.”

The sound of angry Blues supporters screaming Tuchel’s name as they long for the German who guided them to Champions League victory in 2021 will scarcely have relieved Potter.

“I would advise Todd Boehly, a co-owner of Chelsea, to give Graham Potter some time. Every coach need time. I didn’t need two seasons at Barcelona, because Messi was there, ” stated Guardiola.

Chelsea massacre at Etihad

Given Chelsea’s position, it was puzzling that Potter decided to make six substitutions, starting both Lewis Hall and Bashir Humphreys, a fellow teenager who made his debut.

Mahrez who scored the game-winning goal against Chelsea on Thursday, curled a beautiful free kick into the top corner in the 23rd minute to open the floodgates.

German forward Kai Havertz, gave City their second goal when he punched the ball during a challenge with Aymeric Laporte during a corner. Alvarez converted the resulting penalty in the 30th minute.

As Chelsea was being destroyed, Foden scored Chelsea’s third goal in the 38th minute by converting Kyle Walker’s cross.

In the 85th minute, Mahrez scored from the penalty spot after Kalidou Koulibaly fouled Foden, adding insult to injury for Chelsea, which had lost the previous three FA Cup finals.
