LONDON – Manchester United defeated Burnley 2-0 on Wednesday to go into the League Cup quarterfinals as Marcus Rashford scored a spectacular solo goal to mark his return from World Cup duty.

It was United’s first game following the World Cup and also their first after Cristiano Ronaldo‘s shocking exit from Old Trafford and the Glazer family’s admission that they were willing to sell the football club.

Christian Eriksen of Denmark, who also played at Qatar 2022, scored a close-range goal for the Red Devils in the 27th minute to give them the lead.

Just before the hour mark, Rashford, who had three goals for England at the World Cup, extended United’s advantage over second-tier Championship leaders Burnley.

Before firing a shot low into the net, the England forward made a run from within his own half towards the opponents’ box.

Burnley who are currently coached by former Manchester City player Vincent Kompany never looked capable of turning the game afterwards as the Erik ten Hag charges held on.
