Maughan castigates Jacob Zuma for ‘vexatious’ private prosecution bid

News24 legal journalist Karyn Maughan has turned against former President Jacob Zuma's private lawsuit against her, calling it a "meritorious" attempt to silence her and an attack on media freedom.

PRETORIA — News24 legal journalist Karyn Maughan has turned against former President Jacob Zuma‘s private lawsuit against her, calling it a “meritorious” attempt to silence her and an attack on media freedom.

Zuma last year launched a criminal case against Billy Downer for allowing Maughan to “disclose” a medical certificate from his doctor, which Zuma says violates NPA law.

Jacob Zuma launched a private lawsuit against Downer and Maughan, after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) refused to prosecute them.

However, Maughan has since filed an urgent motion challenging the charges against her.

She called the court summons served on her earlier this month “unlawful, vexatious and an abuse of process”.

The legal specialist reporter wants the court to overturn the subpoena and prevent Zuma from pursuing private lawsuits against her.

Maughan said Zuma has ulterior motives and is just trying to bully and harass her; and prevent them from covering his trial.
