JOHANNESBURG – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the death of Presidential Minister Jackson Mthembu, who succumbed to the Covid-19 virus.
Ramaphosa announced the sad news on Thursday that he received the news of the 62-year-old’s death with “profound sadness and shock” as the death toll from the virus continues to rise across Africa, including in the corridors of power.
The President’s statement on the death of Minister Jackson Mthembu reads as follows:
“It is with profound sadness and shock that we announce that Secretary for the Presidency Jackson Mthembu passed away today from complications related to COVID.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of grief.
“Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, activist and defender of freedom and democracy throughout his life. He was a much loved and respected colleague and comrade whose death has puzzled our nation.
“I express my deepest condolences to the Minister’s family, colleagues, comrades and many friends.”
