JOHANNESBURG – Mpho Phalatse was ousted as Mayor of the City of Johannesburg by a motion of no confidence on Friday after her latest attempt to block the motion from going forward was struck off the list by the High Court.
Phalatse was replaced by Dada Morero (ANC) who was elected as the new City of Joburg mayor unopposed on Friday.
One hundred and forty-five members of the council attended the debates, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) refused to attend the extraordinary session of the day on Friday morning.
The latest developments means that the African National Congress (ANC) has succeeded in regaining control of the city of Johannesburg.
The party succeeded in overthrowing Phalatse with the help of smaller partners and the Patriotic Alliance, previously in a multi-party coalition with the DA.
Dada Morero was the only name that appeared in the nominations for the City of Johannesburg mayoral race.
This is the second time that the ANC has succeeded in ousting the DA from power in the economic heart of the country.
ANC defeated a DA-led coalition in 2019 after losing a majority in the 2016 election but lost control again of Johannesburg in the 2021 local elections.
