PRETORIA – President Cyril Ramaphosa has filed an application for leave to appeal the recent judgment by the High Court in Pretoria that declared the recognition of AmaZulu King Misuzulu KaZwelithini as invalid.

The court ruled on Monday that the president’s decision to recognize Misuzulu as the successor to the Zulu throne was “unlawful and invalid.”

The judgment was based on the court’s agreement with submissions from Prince Simakade and Mbonisi Zulu, who argued that proper processes were not followed in the nomination and appointment of Misuzulu.

Ramaphosa ordered to investigate law violation

In response to the ruling, the court directed President Ramaphosa to establish an investigative committee to examine the alleged violation of customary laws in the succession process.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the president’s move, stating, “Following the study of the judgment, the president will apply for leave to appeal. During the course of these legal processes, his majesty King Misuzulu remains the identified heir to the throne.”

The legal challenge has added a layer of complexity to the longstanding matter of the Zulu succession, raising questions about adherence to traditional protocols and procedures.

The appeal process will now be closely watched as it unfolds, with implications for the recognition and status of King Misuzulu KaZwelithini.
