Russia escalates attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure

Ukraine said that Russia launched "massive" missile and drone attacks on Friday, a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky travelled to several European nations to urge for long-range weapons.

KHARKIV (AFP) – Ukraine said that Russia launched “massive” missile and drone attacks on Friday, a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky travelled to several European nations to urge for long-range weapons.

The Ukrainian air force reported on Friday morning that Russia had “targeted cities and important infrastructure facilities,” adding that six Kalibr cruise missiles were fired from the Black Sea, along with seven Iranian-made “kamikaze” drones, from the Sea of Azov.

Five drones and five Kalibr missiles were alleged to have been shot down by the air force.

Additionally, it claimed that Russia launched a “massive” attack using “up to 35 anti-aircraft guided missiles” against the southern Zaporizhzhia region and the eastern Kharkiv region.

According to governor Oleg Sinegubov, “critical and infrastructural facilities were attacked” in Kharkiv, causing fires that were “immediately” extinguished.

No one was hurt, he claimed, but several areas of the city lacked electricity.

According to a local official, Anatoly Kurtev, “energy and industrial infrastructure” in Zaporizhzhia was damaged, leaving some areas of the city without electricity.

The biggest number of attacks since Russia’s invasion over a year ago, according to Kurtev, were recorded during the course of an hour—17 strikes.

The eastern, western, and southern regions of Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s energy provider Ukrenergo, were hit by “multiple high voltage facilities,” which caused power outages in several places.

Ukrenergo added that emergency power cuts had been implemented and that Russia also targeted “power plants and transmission system facilities.”
