PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundowns began the defence of their DStv Premiership title with a hard fought 1-0 win over AmaZulu on Friday evening.
Themba Zwane scored the all important goal from the penalty spot just before half time after Peter Shalulile was brought down in the box by Thembelani Sikhakhane.
Usuthu as AmaZulu is affectionately called, came back the better side in the second half and could have found the equaliser through Sphesihle Maduna whose attempted cross went in goal only for an alert Kennedy Mwene to tip it over.
Sikhakhane had the opportunity to make amends for the earlier mistake but couldn’t direct the ball over goal line and Rushine de Reuck was alert to clear it.
Sundowns had their own chances to extend the lead but Mothobi Mvala was the culprit.
