PRETORIA — Chilean midfielder Marcelo Allende scored in added time in a tenacious DStv Premier League match as Mamelodi Sundowns registered a 1-0 win over AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
Defensively disciplined AmaZulu withstood everything the DStv Premier League leaders threw at them until the 91st minute in a contest staged in Pretoria.
The loss means AmaZulu remain sixth in the league while Masandawana kept their place at the summit.
Allende, who was recently signed from Uruguayan side Montevideo City Torque, looked nonthreatening as he collected the ball in the penalty area before added time ran out.
But his tame angled shot hit the net in the right glove of South African reserve keeper Veli Mothwa, much to AmaZulu’s dismay.
The rest of the extra time passed through the net without any incident, and the victory put Sundowns who are chasing a record sixth consecutive title, five points clear of Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay.
