MADRID – Zimbabwean footballer Tino Kadewere, currently playing in the Spanish La Liga, has expressed his excitement about fulfilling his lifelong dream of competing in one of the world’s best leagues.
Kadewere’s journey to La Liga was unexpected, as he was initially deemed surplus to requirements at his former club Lyon in the French Ligue 1 at the beginning of the current season.
As a result, he was loaned to RCD Mallorca in the Spanish top division.
Although Kadewere faced setbacks due to injuries during the first half of the season, he has showcased his talent since recovering from a sprain, making 13 appearances and scoring a goal in his debut for Mallorca.
His impressive performances have earned him a nomination for the La Liga African MVP (Most Valuable Player) award, a recognition determined by both an online fan vote and a panel of 35 African journalists.
As the first Zimbabwean player to ply his trade in La Liga, Kadewere is hoping to make a significant impact and potentially win the coveted accolade.
However, for the 27-year-old footballer, the opportunity to play in his dream league has been the most exhilarating aspect of his journey.

In an interview on the La Liga Africa Show hosted by Julia Stuart, Kadewere expressed his admiration for the league and his pride in being the first Zimbabwean to compete in La Liga.
“Honestly it’s (La Liga) really amazing. It is one of the best leagues in the world, and for me, I feel like it’s the best that I have played in,” he said.
“I feel really good, and competition here is aggressive; it’s more competitive than where I was. I feel the level is amongst the best.”
Being able to score in his La Liga debut was a dream come true for Kadewere.
Reflecting on the achievement, he stated, “I was really proud of myself; it’s something that I will never forget. For me, it’s something that I always look at.”
Kadewere satisfied with season contribution
Despite facing some challenges, Kadewere remains happy with his contribution this season, praising his supportive teammates and expressing his desire to improve and progress further in the future.
“My debut season has really been amazing. Of course, it has not gone as I had hoped, but I am proud of myself and the team because the team has really been supportive and helpful,” he acknowledged.
“If I am to stay next season, I know I would have adapted very well, and I know that I will be able to progress much better than what I did this season. I am really hopeful.”
As his loan agreement with Mallorca comes to an end on June 30, Kadewere has also indicated his readiness to stay with the club if the opportunity arises.
The loan agreement includes a buy-out clause, giving Kadewere the option to secure a permanent move to Mallorca.
While Kadewere’s journey in La Liga has had its ups and downs, his determination to excel and his passion for the game continue to drive him.
As he makes history as the first Zimbabwean player in the Spanish league, Kadewere remains focused on making the most of his time in La Liga and leaving a lasting impact both for himself and aspiring African footballers.
