Zambia has received 907,200 doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines donated by the Governments of France and Spain through the COVAX Facility.

LUSAKA — Zambia has received 907,200 doses of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines donated by the Governments of France and Spain through the COVAX Facility.

The vaccine receipt comes at a time when the Government and various cooperating partners have been engaging to strategise on scaling up COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

Receiving the donation, Health minister Sylvia Masebo said government remains committed to the COVID-19 response with a goal of ensuring that at least 70% of eligible Zambians are fully vaccinated by June 2022.

“The public may wish to know that during the United Nations General Assembly, several countries committed to share COVID-19 vaccines with other countries as part of the global response to the fight against COVID-19,” Ms Masebo said.

Ms Masebo said government will endeavour to make vaccines available countrywide.

She said the donation will go a long way in ensuring that the vaccines reaches more people with this lifesaving commodity.

Ms Masebo added that vaccines have helped in keeping the wheels of the economy running as evidenced by commerce and trade as well as the re-opening of schools.

The minister encouraged people to take the vaccine in the wake of the looming 5th wave of the Omicron variant.

Ms Masebo thanked France and Spain for gesture.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, I want to take this opportunity to thank most sincerely the people of France and Spain for this support,” said Ms Masebo.

Ambassador of the European Union to Zambia Jacek Janwoski says the donation signifies an important contribution in accelerating the fight against COVID-19 in Zambia.

“The EU and its member states have supported Zambia in all fronts” he said.
