HARARE – The home of Zanu PF activist Sybeth Musengezi in Harare was petrol bombed in a suspected arson attack on Saturday for being involved in a legal challenge to the legitimacy of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Musengezi reported the incident on his Twitter account on Saturday evening.
‘Please help bomb my house in Sandton… 410 Sandton on fire my petrol bomb house please help me,’ he said, accompanying the posts with photos of charred remains of property in his house and the hull of a vehicle that was also booby trapped.
The destroyed property is reportedly worth thousands of dollars while nobody was hurt in the inferno.
Musengezi who was assisted by neighbours to fight the inferno using buckets of water suspects that his house was petrol-bombed.
The young Zanu PF activist who was arrested a few months ago after taking responsibility in a bold legal action challenging Mnangagwa’s legitimacy.
He argues that Zimbabwe’s incumbent president was wrongly promoted to head Zanu PF by party allies following the military-backed coup against the late former President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.
The court challenge, which will soon be heard, is a potential banana peel following the veteran politician’s bid to secure his second consecutive term as Zanu PF first secretary at an election convention later this month.
The post will also earn Emmerson Mnangagwa the ticket to become the party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election.
Since then, no party politician has applied for the post, although there are strong indications of undercurrents within the party against Mnangagwa’s tenure.
It is believed that there is a section within the party rooting for the elevation of Mnangagwa’s dreaded deputy Rtd General Constantino Chiwenga who has ironically been linked to Musengezi.
The alleged arson at Musengezi’s home is the first alleged physical attack on the activist since he issued the challenge against Mnangagwa.
