The person who was killed after being stoned and set on fire in a mob attack in Diepsloot, northwest of Johannesburg overnight, has been identified as Elvis Nyati from Zimbabwe.

Police said officers received statements from witnesses to the attack.

Police spokeswoman Brenda Muridili said: “The reports we are getting from witnesses indicate that a small group of people were knocking on doors and then when they arrived at this house this young man ran away from the house and they were chasing him and unfortunately he was killed.

“As soon as the police received this information they rushed to the scene, but by the time they arrived the people had already dispersed.”

Police say 24 undocumented foreigners were arrested in another incident in the area.

Residents of Diepsloot have launched a protest against escalating crime.

They barricaded the streets with burning tires. It comes after at least seven people were recently shot dead and 14 others injured.

On Tuesday, members of the community went to the police station to deliver a memorandum calling for greater police visibility in the struggling community.

On Wednesday, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited Diepsloot and promised residents that there would be strong police visibility in the area.

However, this did not prevent local residents from taking the law into their own hands.

The situation in Diepsloot remains tense.
