HARARE — A Liverpool fan who mocked rival Manchester United as his side lost 5-0 on Sunday has been seriously injured after being hit with a shovel, a court has heard.

Prosecutors charged Farai Munhenga, 28, with attempted murder when he appeared briefly before Judge Dennis Mangosi in Harare on Monday.

Mangosi remanded Munhenga until November 17 and advised him to apply to the High Court for bail.

Epworth Police were called to a local bar between 6pm and 7pm on Sunday and arrived at a bloody scene after victim Steven Muzikoza was allegedly punched in the face with a shovel by Munhenga.

Muzikoza also sustained injuries to his hands.

The court heard the pair were watching the English Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool as the mood in the bar changed as Liverpool humiliated their bitter rivals 5-0.

When Liverpool fan Muzikoza taunted Munhenga about the loss, the latter allegedly grabbed a shovel and attacked him.

Munhenga, the court heard, was stopped by other fans who were waiting for the police to arrive.
