The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) party joins Zimbabweans in celebrating the independence of our great nation.
We take this opportunity to celebrate that as a country we are free from racist colonial rule.
For us, Independence Day is a day to celebrate the collective determination of our people to continue the liberation struggle to free us from the systematic deprivation of the black majority.
We take this opportunity to thank Zimbabweans and relevant stakeholders for their tireless work to ensure that we strive to ensure that Zimbabwe is democratic and economically stable.
As we celebrate our independence, we note with great concern the vigorous efforts of the then government to amend the constitution to serve the selfish interests of the Zanu PF party.
The NCA party says and agrees with the same view that the constitution should not be changed without popular participation.
We believe that real constitutional reform requires the drafting of a democratic constitution owned by the people.
Although we are independent, we still have issues with our voting system which needs to be improved to ensure it provides a level playing field for all participants.
The NCA believes that electoral reforms are needed before the next general elections in 2023.
Electoral reforms should include the issue that an incumbent president should not appoint the chairman and commissioners of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
Nor should the president be the one who has the last word in the appointment of judges, to ensure that in the event of electoral disputes, there is confidence in the system and sufficient guarantees that the judiciary will not be compromise in the settlement of the dispute.
NCA believes that we must work together to develop our country.
