MUNICH – Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new head coach of Bayern Munich, the German champions announced on Friday.
Tuchel will replace Julian Nagelsmann, who was fired by Bayern Munich after leading them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Bayern Munich, in a statement, said, “FC Bayern and head coach Julian Nagelsmann have parted company… Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel.”
Tuchel, 49, won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, and had previously led Borussia Dortmund and PSG.
Bayern Munich chairman Oliver Kahn said, “Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team, and wish everyone the best of luck for the future.”
Bayern signed Nagelsmann just two years ago to a five-year deal, but the club decided to replace him with Tuchel as they struggle to hold onto their Bundesliga title.
Currently, they sit second to Tuchel’s former club Borussia Dortmund in the league table.
Tuchel’s first match as the new head coach of Bayern Munich will be on April 1 when they face Dortmund. Tuchel had previously led Dortmund from 2015-2017 before he left for PSG.
Reacting to his appointment, Tuchel said, “It is an honor to be appointed as the head coach of Bayern Munich. I look forward to the challenge and working with the talented players at this great club. We will work hard to achieve success on all fronts.”
Tuchel’s appointment has been welcomed by fans of Bayern Munich. One fan said, “Tuchel is a great coach and has a lot of experience. I think he will do well at Bayern Munich.”
