HARARE – Zimbabwe’s leading telecommunications and technology company, Econet Wireless, has announced the launch of the country’s first eSIM (embedded SIM) service, catering to both prepaid and post-paid customer packages.
This new technology offers customers added convenience, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards and enabling users to manage dual or multiple phone numbers on a single device.
Econet expressed its enthusiasm for introducing eSIM technology in a statement, stating, “We are delighted to introduce our customers to this new technology that offers convenience by providing them with additional choice and flexibility.”
The eSIM is a digital SIM card that is embedded directly into a user’s smartphone, allowing them to easily switch between multiple mobile numbers on a single device.
Econet aims to provide a seamless customer experience and enhance its digital transformation strategy with the introduction of this technology.

Econet Wireless robust strategy
The activation of eSIMs is now available free of charge at all Econet shops nationwide. To determine if their device is compatible with eSIM technology, customers can dial *#06# to access their “Embedded Identity Document” (EID).
If their device is compatible, customers can visit the nearest Econet shop with their original personal identification document (ID) to have their new eSIM activated for free.
Econet also noted that a variety of mobile smartphone devices are compatible with eSIM technology.
The company listed several compatible devices, including the iPhone XS to iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy S20 to S23 series, Samsung Note 20, Huawei P40 to Huawei Mate 40 Pro, and Itel Vision 3 Plus and Itel P37 Pro.
Econet emphasized the security and environmental benefits of eSIM technology. eSIMs are considered more secure than physical SIM cards because they cannot be accessed externally.
Additionally, the technology facilitates the easy transfer of data to a new device and is environmentally friendly, as it eliminates the need for waste disposal associated with physical SIM cards.
The introduction of eSIM technology by Econet Wireless marks a significant milestone in enhancing telecommunications services and digital capabilities for customers in Zimbabwe.
