BULAWAYO – Armed robbers ambushed a How Mine cash and gold truck in Bulawayo on Tuesday and reportedly made off with an estimated $450,000 worth of gold.
The incident took place along Bulawayo-How Mine Road, Douglasdale where gold on transit from the mine to Fidelity Printers, Bulawayo and four firearms were stolen.
Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesman Paul Nyathi confirmed the theft and said the thieves got away with 11.9kg of gold.
“Police are investigating. According to information we have, 13 suspects approached a security company carrying cash in three vehicles.
“The suspects disarmed security forces during a shootout; they stole four weapons fire, including 25 pounds of gold. No further information can be obtained at this time as the investigation is ongoing,” Nyathi said.
Sources at How Mine said the robbery happened around noon Tuesday with a shootout between the robbers and security forces taking place before the money and gold were swindled.
The thieves are believed to have used a Nissan Hardbody, a Toyota GD6 and a Nissan March. The vehicles had multiple bullet holes on their bodies, witnesses said.
