LONDON – Arsenal‘s manager, Mikel Arteta, voiced his deep disappointment following a controversial 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The decisive moment of the match occurred when Anthony Gordon scored just after the hour mark.
However, the goal underwent a lengthy VAR check due to concerns over the ball going out of play, a potential foul, and offside situations before being allowed to stand, securing Newcastle’s victory.
Arteta, who was visibly upset with the decision, expressed his frustration over the result and felt that his team deserved better.
He believed that a valuable point against a formidable opponent had slipped away.
In a post-match statement, Arteta commented on the controversial moment: “For what the boys did out there and the way a football match has to be played, and what is allowed in football to score a goal, obviously we are talking about a very different topic.”
“I feel embarrassed to be part of this show. It is unacceptable and is an absolute disgrace.”

Despite a determined effort from his players, Arsenal was left with zero points while Newcastle secured all three.
Arteta emphasized the fine margins in the Premier League and how their hard work on the pitch didn’t reflect the result.
“In this league, the margins are so small, the competition is too big, and it is unacceptable to be in this position after what we’ve done on that pitch,” Arteta added.
The Arsenal manager continued to praise his players for their performance, stating, “I have no regrets with what the players have tried to do, the way they have performed.
“We will continue to do that but we cannot be in the hands of other people with the amount of work that we put in and the amount of effort that goes in, how much is at stake in a game for a football club and everything that is behind us. It is not good enough and we cannot accept that, I’m sorry.”
The defeat marked the end of Arsenal’s unbeaten start in circumstances that left Arteta and his team deeply disappointed.
