JOHANNESBURG – Johannesburg mayor Mpho Phalatse has said the city will prioritize building an efficient transport system to attract investors which she believes will boost the city’s local economy.
Phalatse spoke at the unveiling of 105 metro buses that are part of its multi-billion rand modernization program.
Metrobus local transport service has completed its R49 million refurbishment programme, fueled by an aging fleet and increased demand for the service.
The facelift took a total of three years.
Phalatse described the project as a key part of the “Golden Repair”, the coalition government’s plan to transform the city.
Phalatse told reporters that investors were looking at key factors such as mobility, accessibility and the reliability of the city’s transportation system.
“Having these reliable buses on the road means investors can expand their business and they will independently attract skilled workers from all parts of the city. People will be able to access their operations with our buses.
The mayor of Joburg has high hopes the city’s redevelopment project will help reduce travel costs, which will ease the burden on low-income commuters.
