BEIJING – China’s phase 4 lunar probe mission, consisting of Chang’e-6, -7 and -8, which will be carried out consecutively in 10 years, has received government approval and is proceeding smoothly, China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on Saturday.

The mission hopes to explore the south polar region of the Moon and establish a core structure of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS).

The Chang’e-6 probe, which served as a backup for Chang’e-5 with a sampling function, will travel to the far side of the moon, said Liu Jizhong, director of the China Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV).

Liu Jizhong added that the module is essentially complete.

Liu pointed out that the Chang’e-7 probe is currently under development. The mission will then explore the south polar region of the moon and establish a framework for the ILRS.
