China and Lesotho celebrate 30 years of diplomatic success

BEIJING, China Chinese President Xi Jinping and Lesotho’s King Letsie III exchanged warm congratulations on Friday, marking the 30th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In a cordial exchange, both leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and further strengthening the longstanding friendship between China and Lesotho.

President Xi Jinping highlighted the collaborative journey both countries have undertaken over the past three decades, emphasizing their mutual support on issues crucial to each other’s interests.

He commended the joint efforts in national development, cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the positive example set by their friendship.

“We have supported each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns, joined hands on the journey of national development and revitalization, and helped each other in tackling challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, setting a good example of friendly coexistence and common development for large and small countries,” President Xi stated.

Expressing his commitment to the ongoing development of the China-Lesotho relationship, President Xi said, “I attach great importance to the development of China-Lesotho relations and am ready to work with King Letsie III to take the 30th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties as a new starting point to further elevate bilateral relations.”

King Letsie III reciprocated the warm sentiments, acknowledging the remarkable progress achieved by both nations in the past 30 years.

He highlighted the solid diplomatic relationship founded on principles of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and mutual benefit.

“Lesotho stands ready to coordinate closely with China to continually strengthen Lesotho-China friendship and friendly cooperation, and to support the development and prosperity of both nations,” affirmed King Letsie III.

In a parallel exchange of congratulations, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Lesotho Prime Minister Sam Matekane expressed their commitment to the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Premier Li emphasized the positive momentum in Chinese-Lesotho relations and pledged to work towards sustainable bilateral development.

“China stands ready to take the 30th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties as an opportunity to make concerted efforts with Lesotho to promote the sustainable development of bilateral ties,” Premier Li stated.

Prime Minister Matekane reiterated Lesotho’s unwavering support for Beijing and its participation in collaborative initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Africa Cooperation Forum.

The celebrations mark a significant milestone in the diplomatic history of China and Lesotho, reinforcing their commitment to mutual growth and cooperation.
