CAPE TOWN – Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their DStv Premiership title defense on Friday night by beating Cape Town City FC 2-0 in the opener of the new season at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.
The defending champions put in a strong second-half performance to break down the hosts’ stubborn resistance.
Goals from Aubrey Modiba and Themba Zwane were enough for Masandawana to collect the three points in a match they played away from home.
Modiba opened the scoring just after the hour mark from a set piece after midfielder Haashim Domingo was fouled near City’s penalty area.
Two minutes later the visitors made it 2-0 when the Domingo destroyed City defense before squaring Zwane who scored to make it 2-0.
City tried to regroup in the closing stages of the game, but the champions’ defense were up to snuff to stop City’s attacks.
