Chinsinga believes Malawi urbanisation initiative will unlock economic growth

LILONGWE – Minister of Local Government, Professor Blessings Chinsinga believes that urbanization, if well managed, facilitates sustained economic growth and thereby promoting broad social welfare.

Chinsinga said this after presiding over the official launch of the Malawi Secondary Cities Plan (MSCP) on behalf of President Lazarus Chakwera.

The architecture of the Secondary Cities Initiative intends to push urbanization benefits beyond the primary four cities.

“The MSCP compliments well with both the Malawi 2063 and the Malawi Implementation Plan 1 (MIP 1) as they both single out urbanization as one of the key pillars in rolling out the transformation agenda geared at both creating wealth and employment in the evolution,” Chinsinga said.

He added that the socia-economic indicators for sustainable development in urban councils, to a large extent, depending on the function of a common dependent variable of population growth.

“The creation of Secondary Cities in Karonga, Nkhata-Bay, Salima, Liwonde, Mangochi, Kasungu, Luchenza and Bangula was identified through a 3-year rigorous analysis by technocrats from both state and non-state actors to bring about development and better quality of life to citizens,” he explained.
