HARARE – MDC Alliance spokeswoman Fadzai Mahere has announced that she has tested positive for the dreaded Covid-19 virus after seven days in prison.

Mahere was arrested for posting lies by tweeting that a police officer had killed a baby with a baton, while a later police statement said the baby was alive.

On Wednesday, Mahere said she tested positive for Covid-19 after being released on bail last Friday.

“Even though I was in an ‘isolation cell’ and ‘quarantine section’ of Chikurubi Maximum Prison, after seven days in pre-trial detention, I tested positive for Covid-19,” a- she said in a statement.

“Although I currently only have a cough and fever, I have chosen to share my findings to raise awareness of the deplorable state of our prison conditions and the very real threat facing prisoners in these prisons. establishments.”

Mahere said she had a fever and a cough but was more worried about the inmates, who are all exposed to the virus, due to the dire state of prisons in Zimbabwe.

“My current goal is to return to good health, but my heart breaks for the many inmates I left behind. At this time, I pray that my experiences will inspire us to act on behalf of those whom society has left behind, silenced and largely forgotten. They don’t even have the basic need – running water. That’s before we look at soap, sanitizer, clean masks and proper facilities to enable social distancing.

“I urge those with the power to change things to look at the state of our prisons and act accordingly,” she said.
