The EU Ambassador to Malawi, His Excellency Rune Skinnebach has said the firing of the Inspector General of Police George Kainja by President Lazarus Chakwera is a clear indication that now the President is very serious about fighting corruption.

Skinnebach said this on Tuesday in Mzuzu after interacting with journalists from the Nyika Media Club but said the firing of the IG alone is not enough but at least there is an achievement in the fight against corruption which is deeply rooted in the country which needs people’s mindset to be changed.

He has therefore challenged journalists to report more on corruption which he said has crippled some essential services in the country such as health, education and infrastructure development.

In his remarks, Nyika Media Club chairperson Joseph Mwale, commended the EU envoy for supporting journalists through capacity building trainings on various socioeconomic endeavours.

“It is very important for the EU Ambassador to interact with the media who contributes significantly to the integral part of the country’s development,” Mwale said.

On Tuesday, June 21st, 2022 President Chakwera fired George Kainja and suspended State House Chief of staff and Chairperson of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) as they are among the 13 individuals to have been extensively investigated by ACB.

During his Nation Address, Chakwera also said he has withhold any delegated duties to his vice Saulos Chilima while waiting for the Anti-Corruption Bureau to substantiate its allegations against the State vice President and to make known its course of action in relation to such.
