DURBAN – South African rapper AKA, real name, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on Florida Road on Friday night, according to police sources in Durban.
Another person, who is thought to be Kiernan Jarryd Forbes’ bodyguard, was also injured. A third unnamed individual, who is said to be his close friend, was shot and killed.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a spokesman for the police, acknowledged that two murder cases were under investigation and that the motives for the killings had not yet been determined.
He acknowledged that one of the deceased was a well-known musician without mentioning Forbes.
AKA was killed in a drive-by gunshot while he was standing outside the Wish Restaurant.
It is thought that soon before 10 o’clock, two unidentified automobiles started shooting.
He was scheduled to perform at the Durban nightclub YUGO as part of his birthday celebrations, according to social media posts.
Forbes was 35 years old at the time of his death. He was born on 28 January 1988 in the city of Cape Town, South Africa.
In January, the late AKA revealed 24 February 2023 as the day that his new album, Mass Country, was scheduled to be released.
He is survived by daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes whom he had with DJ Zinhle, real name, Ntombezinhle Jiyane.
Up until their breakup in January 2020, DJ Zinhle and AKA had a sporadic relationship.
At the time of his death, he was in a relationship with rapper and television personality Nadia Nakai who is believed to be pregnant with his child.
