PRETORIA – The country’s highest court has sentenced former President Jacob Zuma to 15 months in prison on charges relating to corruption.

Zuma who has been a subject of investigation in recent months, was found guilt of contempt for defying the order by the Constitutional Court to appear at an inquiry into corruption while he was in office.

He was also ordered to pay for the legal costs incurred by the Zondo chaired State Capture Commission when the case was taken to court.

The ruling was made on Tuesday morning in which Zuma was overwhelmingly found guilty of contempt, becoming the first South Africa former president to receive such sentence.

The former leader of African National Congress is accused of money laundering, racketeering and fraud dating back to 1999 when he was the country’s deputy.

Zuma denies the charges levelled against him, insisting the whole process is politically motivated.
