Ethiopian Airlines has suspended ticket sales for all travel agencies in Malawi effective Tuesday due to foreign currency shortage.
Eliza Chimbaya, secretary of the Association of Travel Agents of Malawi, acknowledged receipt of the notice Tuesday morning.
Chimbaya said Ethiopian Airlines has raised concerns in recent months that the Reserve Bank of Malawi has been unable to transfer funds to its accounts due to dwindling foreign exchange reserves.
The directive means that passengers coming from Malawi have to buy tickets in other countries.
However, a source familiar with the decision said the directive will not affect Malawi Airlines ticketing in the meantime.
