Hichilema tells Zambian men to stop monitoring their wives’ phones

President Hakainde Hichilema has encouraged Zambian men to refrain from monitoring their wives' phones as part of a call to action to try to lower the nation's divorce rates.

LUSAKA – President Hakainde Hichilema has encouraged Zambian men to refrain from monitoring their wives’ phones as part of a call to action to try to lower the nation’s divorce rates.

The president referred to the latest divorce numbers as regrettable for Zambia because they show that the nation had over 22,000 divorce lawsuits in only one year.

Adultery, a lack of marital rights, aggression against women, insults, and harshness were among the top justifications for divorce given in court.

“We marry for love, we don’t marry to go and check each other out, or to go and point a finger. Freedom means responsibility to limit our freedom, not to tamper with the freedom of others. Be tolerant, be understanding.”

– Hakainde Hichilema (President of Zambia)

Hichilema made the sentiments when he hosted a local monarch recently.

According to statistics from the last 12 months, the Zambia’s shortest marriage lasted only 30 days, while the longest lasted 65 years.
