HARARE – Zimbabwe journalist Hopewell Chin’ono who was arrested for exposing corruption by the Zanu PF ruling elite will remain in prison at least until Tuesday, August 18, after magistrate Ngoni Nduna on Friday postponed a ruling into a prosecution application for defense lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa to stand down for contempt.
Nduna said he needs internet to research and that can only happen at the weekend till the day in question. The magistrate also said he was baffled by prison officers who took the accused to the High Court without any documents.
On its part, the state said that taking Chin’ono to the High Court earlier on Friday morning was a gross mistake which was not deliberate.
Meanwhile at the High Court, the authorities were ordered to uphold the rights of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume of Transform Zimbabwe party who was also arrested for demanding the fall of corruption by organizing the July 31st Demonstration.
It has become a habit for the Mnangagwa led administration to victimize any citizen or figure who raise their head demanding a stop to the administration rot, justice, essential priorities and upholding of the rule of law.
The rights which the state was ordered to uphold include granting the two the right to hold private consultations with lawyers, having access to food and doctors of their choice.
