LONDON (AFP) – Pop icon Madonna, the queen of pop, embarked on her highly-anticipated 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour in London on Saturday.
Her fans, who had waited three-and-a-half months, were thrilled to witness her triumphant return after battling a bacterial infection that had led to her hospitalization and tour postponement.
The 65-year-old American superstar endured a critical hospitalization period in New York in June after being found unconscious in her apartment.
The tour was originally scheduled to begin in Canada on July 15, but due to her health challenges, the British capital’s O2 Arena became the tour’s opening venue.
Excited fans filled the arena, eager to hear Madonna’s greatest hits.
Kate Taylor, a 46-year-old teacher, expressed her anticipation, saying, “I’m really excited for the greatest hits because I think that’s what we all want to see.”
Janet Hutton, who turned 50 the following day and traveled from Slovakia to attend her fourth Madonna concert, declared, “Madonna is the queen of pop. When you’re a big fan of Madonna, you feel that you live with her, and we live with her now, and we’re very excited to see her.”

Madonna’s return to the stage was not without hiccups.
She encountered early technical difficulties during the first show, resulting in a brief pause.
The singer apologized to the audience, stating, “This is exactly what you don’t want to happen on your opening night so this wasn’t planned. I’m sorry.”
However, these issues were swiftly resolved, and she continued to captivate the audience with lively renditions of her classic tracks.
For the 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour, Madonna performs without an on-stage band, a departure from her previous shows.
The tour promises to be a documentary-style journey through her remarkable career, featuring archive footage and studio recordings.
According to her musical director, Stuart Price, a “greatest hit” can be a song, a wardrobe, a video, or a statement.
During the performance, Madonna included powerful messages.
She sent her support to Israelis and Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in the region, and she draped a Ukrainian flag over her back while performing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.”
Madonna’s iconic four-decade career is a testament to her artistic evolution and cultural impact.
Her 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour will continue through mid-November in Paris, extend into January in Montreal, and conclude in Mexico on April 24.
The tour encompasses a broad spectrum of her greatest hits and iconic moments.
Madonna, once a dancer in New York in the late 1970s, has since earned seven Grammy Awards and sold over 300 million records globally.
Beyond her music career, she has ventured into acting, film directing, and business endeavors.
In July, Madonna displayed her unwavering commitment to her fans and the tour when she revealed, “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour.”
Madonna’s return to the stage is a celebration of her incredible journey in the music industry and an opportunity for fans to relive her timeless classics.
The 40th Anniversary Celebration Tour promises to be a tribute to Madonna’s remarkable career, a testament to her resilience, and a gift to her devoted fans who have supported her over four decades.
